But here's the real magic: when you turn around, you're treated to some of the most picture-perfect views of the lake.

Bamburgh Castle, England

Rising like a mirage over the white-sand beaches of Northumberland, this medieval marvel has a history that stretches back to the 5th century. It's an underestimation to merely call it a living legend that has woven itself into stories and poems for centuries. Some scholars even suspect it might have starred as the inspiration for Sir Lancelot’s castle in Arthurian legend; talk about legendary!

But the magic doesn't stop there, Bamburgh Castle has taken a turn in the spotlight, gracing the big screen in films like Elizabeth (1998) and the Michael Fassbender version of Macbeth (2015). It's not just a castle with a view; it's a star in its own right. What are the Micronations in the World?

In a world where borders are etched in geopolitics and nations often defined by the stamp of international recognition, there exists a parallel universe of pint-sized pioneers, daring dreamers, and audacious adventurers. They are the creators of the world's most unconventional countries, the trailblazers of territories unknown, and the embodiment of the age-old adage: "Where there's a will, there's a way."

Ladies and gentlemen, step off the beaten path and into the fantastical realm of micronations: a captivating tapestry of eccentricity, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of sovereignty. With a society where the grandiose ambitions of empires and superpowers dominate headlines, these "mini-states" may seem like mere acts of whim. But make no mistake, these diminutive dominions are more than just flights of fancy; they are vibrant pockets of human imagination, where reality meets the extraordinary in a dance of political defiance.

With as many as 140 micronations scattered across the globe, from the remote reaches of New Zealand to the sunburnt landscapes of Australia, and over 400 recorded throughout recent history, the microverse of micronations beckons with its tantalizing mysteries. These are the brainchildren of visionaries who have transcended the ordinary to craft their own utopias, often perched on the precipice of legitimacy. Come embark on an exhilarating expedition into the uncharted territories of these audacious realms! Here, statehood rituals are performed with unwavering conviction, pacts are signed in ink and idealism, diplomatic relations are brokered over tea and trust, and flags are unfurled to proudly proclaim their existence.

Republic of Parva Domus

photo from: wikipedia.org

Within the bustling neighborhood of Punta Carretas, nestled discreetly within the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, lies a hidden gem that's easy to overlook. Boasting a territory measuring a mere 0.2 square kilometers, the Republic of Parva Domus stands as a testament to the extraordinary journeys of human imagination. While history books recount the Pilgrims' voyage across the Atlantic in search of religious freedom and the birth of Liberia as a sanctuary for former African slaves, the story of Parva Domus is one of a different kind—a quirky tale rooted in the passion of amateur Uruguayan fishermen, who had a rather unconventional dream.

Imagine a nation where the Latin inscription on a humble house's facade, "Parva Domus Magna Quies," serves as a guiding philosophy: "small house, big rest." Within its borders, like any sovereign state worldwide, Parva Domus boasts its own Constitution. However, here, centuries-old rules dictate that citizens must steer clear of certain conversational minefields, including politics, religion, and even sports. The primary mission of this micronation is simple and profound: the pursuit of pleasure and happiness, as passionately proclaimed in their national anthem. Yet, there's more to Parva Domus than meets the eye. This unique male-only democracy holds a peculiar tradition for those who dare to harbor anger within their hearts. Offenders are confined within a cage, subjected to a trial like no other. Remarkably, every defendant is afforded legal representation, a task that isn't too difficult to fulfill, given that many Parva citizens are lawyers, doctors, or politicians by trade.

Since its establishment in 1878 by a group of amateur Uruguayan fishermen, Parva Domus has generously doled out 843,297 citizenships, a testament to its enduring allure. The "day of independence," as they fondly refer to it, is celebrated annually with an exuberant parade.

La République du Saugeais

photo from: wikipedia.org

Nestled in the picturesque département of Doubs, in the enchanting eastern region of France, lies a territory that defies the conventions of nationhood. The Republic of Saugeais, spanning a modest 128 square kilometers and comprising eleven municipalities, is a testament to the magic that can emerge from a playful jest. In 1947, the seeds of this fantastical micronation were sown during an unexpected lunchtime encounter at the Hôtel de l'Abbaye in Montbenoît. The inn's proprietor, Georges Pourchet, couldn't resist a twinkle of humor when he jokingly quizzed the visiting prefect of the Doubs department about his permit to enter the Republic of Saugeais. Little did he know, this jest would set the stage for an extraordinary journey into the realms of imagination.

As fate would have it, the prefect, rather than dismissing the notion outright, responded with a flourish of whimsy by bestowing upon Pourchet the title of President of the Free Republic of Saugeais. And thus, a micronation was born—a nation not defined by borders, but by the vivid imagination of its creators. Intriguingly, the legacy of the Republic of Saugeais continued to evolve under the stewardship of President Gabrielle Pourchet, widow of Georges Pourchet. She elevated this micronation to unprecedented heights by appointing a Prime Minister, a General Secretary, twelve Ambassadors, and over 300 honorary citizens. The micronation's unique identity was further shaped by the adoption of the Langue Saugette, a Franco-Provençal dialect, as its official language. A rhapsody of unity and identity was captured in the national anthem, penned back in 1910, echoing through the picturesque valleys and meadows of Saugeais.

Atlantium

photo from: wikipedia.org

Micronations, where eccentricity often reigns supreme, exists as a haven of thoughtful progressivism and visionary ideals. Founded in the year 1981 by a trio of audacious teenagers hailing from Sydney, Australia, Atlantium emerged as a beacon of hope for those seeking a fresh perspective on nation-building. Their journey began with the audacious claim of a provisional 10 square meters of territory in the unassuming suburb of Narwee, Australia: a symbolic starting point for an extraordinary venture.

As Atlantium's ambitions swelled, so did its capital. In 1999, the founders boldly declared their 61-square-meter apartment as the micronation's second capital. Concordia followed suit in 2008, becoming the third capital of Atlantium when the rural Province of Aurora, spanning 0.76 square kilometers, was officially established. What began as a whimsical teenage endeavor had transformed into a multifaceted micronation, spanning urban, suburban, and rural landscapes.

While Atlantium's geographical footprint grew modestly, its virtual borders expanded exponentially. By 2015, this micronation boasted nearly 3,000 "citizens," a diverse cohort hailing from more than 100 countries. But many of these self-proclaimed Atlantians had never set foot on Atlantium's soil; their allegiance was forged through the digital ether, a testament to the power of ideas transcending physical boundaries. In the realm of micronations, where flamboyance often takes center stage, Atlantium stands as a refreshing anomaly. Described as an antidote to the self-aggrandizing tendencies of many micronations, it earned praise in The Lonely Planet Guide to Home-Made Nations in 2006. This micronation has become synonymous with progressive and liberal policies, embodying the essence of a "secular humanist utopia."

Gay & Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands

photo from: wikipedia.org

In the shimmering waters of the Coral Sea, nestled amidst uninhabited islets east of the Great Barrier Reef, an extraordinary story of love, protest, and resilience unfolds. In the year 2004, against the backdrop of Australia's refusal to recognize same-sex marriages, a band of passionate gay rights activists from the land down under embarked on a symbolic journey, one that would see the birth of a unique micronation in the heart of the Coral Sea Islands.

It was Matthew Briggs, with a heart brimming with determination, who conceived the audacious idea during the 2003 Brisbane Gay and Lesbian Pride Festival. Fueled by the fervor for equal rights and love, on June 14, 2004, these activists embarked on a voyage to Cato Island aboard the "Gayflower" ship. Upon their arrival, they unfurled the rainbow pride flag, a potent symbol of unity, and declared the Coral Sea Islands an independent gay and lesbian state. A modest campsite on Cato Island, whimsically named "Heaven," was proclaimed as the capital of this newfound micronation. For over a decade, the Gay & Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands stood as a testament to the power of love and the unyielding determination of its founders. It was a beacon of hope and a striking symbol of the LGBTQ+ community's resilience in the face of adversity.

Yet, like all great stories, this one too found its resolution. In November 2017, the Kingdom chose to dissolve itself, its mission accomplished. Australia had, at long last, legalized gay marriage: a historic milestone that marked the culmination of years of tireless activism and advocacy.

Situated on the slopes of Mount Titano and located on the Adriatic side of central Italy, San Marino is a curious place travelers all over the globe would want to at least visit once. With the country being the smallest independent state in all of Europe—after Vatican City Monaco—until Nauru, the smallest republic in the world, gained its independence, the beautiful country of San Marino has always been a destination that tingles enough curiosity for an adventure. Crossed by the Marano and Ausa streams, San Marino is filled with limestone culminating into the mass of Mount Titano, with hills spreading out on the southwest, while the northeastern slopes to the Romagna plain and the Adriatic Coast.

Get Ready to Embark on a Scenic Stroll Through San Marino's Charming Capital

Step into the enchanting world of the City of San Marino, where pedestrians rule the streets and every corner reveals a delightful surprise. If you're up for an adventure that involves sightseeing, marveling at local architecture, souvenir shopping, and immersing yourself in the country's unique vibe, there's no better way to do it than on foot!

Picture this: You're setting off on a DIY walking tour through the heart of San Marino's capital, starting your journey on the bustling main street. It won't be long before you find yourself in the vibrant Liberty Square–a place where locals and tourists alike come together. And guess what? It's also the home to some of the most iconic buildings in the entire city!

As you amble along the charming streets of San Marino, prepare to be utterly amazed by jaw-dropping vistas that stretch out from the mountaintop. These breathtaking panoramas not only showcase the lush Italian countryside but also extend all the way to the glistening Adriatic Sea on those crystal-clear days.

Unearth the Mystique of the Three Towers

In the pint-sized realm of San Marino, safeguarding its cherished independence from foreign intruders has forever been a paramount mission. To fortify this commitment, the nation is cocooned by robust stone defensive walls, and graced with ancient sentinel towers: the legendary 'Three Fortresses of San Marino,' perched atop the three peaks of Mount Titano, where the capital also proudly resides. These three towers aren't just architectural wonders; they are the beating heart of the nation, adorning its very flag with their presence. Alas, not all of them fling their gates wide open to the public, but they are treasured national symbols.

The oldest of them all is Torre Guaita, also known as Rocca Guaita, and it's the most frequently visited because it's a mesmerizing beauty, offering unparalleled vistas of the rolling countryside. This ancient sentinel, dating back to the 11th century, boasts a history that includes a brief stint as a prison. Today, it's open for curious souls to explore. The second tower, Torre Cesta, stands proudly at the highest peak of Mount Titano. It's slightly younger than Guaita and houses a captivating weapon and armor museum, spanning from the Middle Ages to modern times. Open to the public, it's a thrilling journey through history. Then there's Torre Montale, regrettably off-limits to visitors. The youngest sibling, constructed in the 14th century, also wore the mantle of a prison during its lifetime.

The visiting hours for the main two towers can change with the seasons, and since conquering the summit can be a bit of a hike, it's wise to check at the tourist office in town before embarking on your ascent. A majestic mountain path, the 'Passo delle Streghe' or 'Witches' Passage,' ingeniously also links the three towers. Along this lofty route, perched atop Mount Titano, you'll be treated to vistas that'll steal your breath away.

Both the historical core of San Marino and the tower ensemble enjoy the prestigious title of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so for budget-conscious explorers, an interactive tour of San Marino is just a download away on your phone, ready for your every whim and fancy during your visit, even offering a pit stop and insights into the three towers. But if you’re opting for a private tour, a local guide will escort you, unraveling all the mysteries and answering every burning question you have about these towers and other ancient marvels nestled within the historic heart of San Marino. Plus, you'll be treated to a cable car ride, bypassing some of the steeper climbs.

Step into the Heart of San Marino's Governance: The Palazzo Publico

photo from: sanmarinosite.com

Nestled in the heart of Freedom Square (Piazza della Libertà), you'll find the esteemed Palazzo Publico, the very nucleus of San Marino's government. This splendid institution holds an esteemed place among the nation's treasures, boasting a grand square tower constructed from the very stones of Mount Titano itself.

With its Neo-Gothic facade, the palace stands proudly beside the protective fortress walls, and its sentinel watchtowers once played an integral role in safeguarding the republic. It's a living testament to the rich history and enduring spirit of San Marino, a must-visit for anyone eager to delve into the heart of this remarkable nation!

Embrace the Vibrant Atmosphere of Liberty Square

Just a stone's throw from the Palazzo Publico, Liberty Square (Piazza della Libertà) is where the magic happens! Here, you can catch the captivating spectacle of the Guardie di Rocca, the fortress guard corps, as they perform the ceremonial change of the guard. Nestled at the heart of this lively square is the Statue of Liberty, a graceful figure gracing a magnificent fountain. As you wander around, you'll discover charming souvenir shops and cozy cafes, offering you the perfect perch for some leisurely people-watching moments.

And here's the best part: The picturesque changing of the guard ceremony unfolds like clockwork, with performances every half-hour, every single day of the week. So, whether you're seeking a dose of history or simply a delightful break in your day, Liberty Square is the place to be.

Journey through the Museo di Stato

photo from: commons.wikimedia.org

Amidst the array of museums beckoning you to explore, there's one that truly stands out, and it deserves a special place on your itinerary: the Museo di Stato, San Marino's illustrious national museum.

Nestled in the charming Piazzetta del Titano Square, this museum is an attraction in its own right. Housed within a splendid historic palace, it exudes an aura of elegance and antiquity that's bound to captivate you from the moment you arrive. And when you step inside, you'll be transported through time. Various exhibitions await, showcasing archaeological treasures harking back to the Neolithic era and the enigmatic Etruscan civilization.

A dedicated section within the museum also unveils a captivating Egyptian collection, alongside an assortment of ancient artworks, including paintings, coins, and icons hailing from the Byzantine school. It's a treasure trove of history and art, a true feast for the curious soul. That’s why you should allocate a few hours in your itinerary to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of the Museo di Stato, and prepare to be enchanted by the stories and artifacts that have withstood the test of time.

But if you're hungry for adventure, keep in mind that food and drinks supplied by Booking.com might have a surprise or two. Gluten, dairy, and nuts might make a cameo! Intramuros, Manila

Welcome to the captivating world of Intramuros, the historic heart of Manila! Step back in time and immerse yourself in the richness of the Spanish Empire's political, educational, and religious center in the Philippines. Intramuros, once an opulent walled city strategically nestled along the majestic Manila Bay, stands as a testament to centuries of history and cultural heritage.

For over three centuries, Intramuros served as the seat of Spanish rule, spanning from the late 16th century to the 19th century. The mighty walls that encircle this remarkable enclave were painstakingly constructed between 1590 and 1872, encompassing the entirety of Manila at that time. As you wander through the narrow streets of Intramuros, you'll encounter a treasure trove of significant landmarks that have withstood the test of time. Marvel at the awe-inspiring Manila Cathedral, a majestic symbol of faith that has witnessed countless historical events. Explore the magnificent San Agustin Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a true architectural gem that echoes with centuries of prayers and whispers of the past.

Step into Casa Manila, a meticulously recreated Spanish colonial house, where you can glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the privileged during that era. Discover the formidable Baluarte de San Diego, a fortress that once stood as a bastion of defense, proudly guarding the city against foreign invaders. And don't miss Fort Santiago, a place of both sorrow and courage, where the national hero, Jose Rizal, was once imprisoned, leaving an indelible mark on the nation's history.

Intramuros was not only a hub of governance and spirituality but also a center of learning. The original campuses of the prestigious University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Manila were once nestled within these fortified walls until the early 20th century. Today, remnants of this educational legacy can still be found, with cobblestone streets, fragments of walls, and well-preserved structures that transport you back to a bygone era.

Banaue Rice Terraces, Ifugao

The Banaue Rice Terraces is a testament to the ingenuity and cultural heritage of the indigenous Ifugao people. These magnificent terraces, built centuries ago by the ancestors of the Ifugao community, have rightfully been declared a National Cultural Treasure by the government in 1973.

At the core of the Ifugao culture lies the profound connection to rice cultivation and agriculture, and the Banaue Rice Terraces beautifully embody this bond. These terraces serve as a tangible testament to the significance of rice production, as they are intricately woven into the fabric of agricultural rites and practices. Witnessing the terraces, one can't help but be moved by the immense respect and reverence that the Ifugao people hold for the land and its resources. From the meticulous earthwork and stonework to the sophisticated irrigation systems, every aspect of the terraces reflects their profound understanding of the environment and their commitment to preserving the integrity of this awe-inspiring landscape.

While the Banaue Rice Terraces themselves are not included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, their significance remains unparalleled. The omission is due to the presence of modern structures in the area. However, fear not, for nearby you can find two of the listed terraces that will leave you equally enchanted—the Batad Rice Terraces and the Bangaan Rice Terraces. The Banaue Rice Terraces, accessible from various view decks along the Nueva Vizcaya-Ifugao-Mountain Province Road, offer stunning vistas that will leave you breathless.

Corregidor Island

photo from: atlasobscura.com/places/corregidor-island

Affectionately known as "The Rock,” Corregidor Island is situated at the entrance of Manila Bay. This strategically positioned island served as a vital military base during the tumultuous era of World War II, as its strong fortifications played a crucial role in defending Manila Bay from enemy attacks. While many assume Corregidor Island to be part of Bataan due to its close proximity and historical ties, it is, in fact, under the jurisdiction of Cavite City. This unique administrative arrangement adds an intriguing element to the island's rich tapestry of history and culture.

As you step foot on Corregidor Island, you'll be transported back in time, surrounded by remnants and ruins that bear witness to its storied past. Each crumbling structure serves as a poignant war memorial, reminding visitors of the sacrifices and courage displayed during those challenging years. Explore the hallowed grounds that have become synonymous with valor and resilience. Among the significant historical sites on the island, the Pacific War Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the heroes who fought bravely during World War II. The Malinta Tunnel, once a crucial underground facility, echoes with the whispers of history, inviting you to unravel its secrets. The Filipino Heroes Memorial honors the indomitable spirit of the Filipino people, paying homage to their unwavering determination.

As you traverse the island, be sure to visit the iconic Corregidor Lighthouse, which proudly stands as a guiding beacon and a symbol of hope. The Japanese Garden of Peace offers a tranquil sanctuary, inviting contemplation and reflection. And don't miss the Mile-Long Barracks, a poignant reminder of the island's turbulent past.

Cagsawa Ruins, Albay

photo from: wikipedia.org/wiki/Cagsawa_Ruins

Cast your gaze upon the iconic image that has mesmerized the world—a church tower, entombed in volcanic ash, with the majestic yet volatile Mayon Volcano gracing the background.

In the late 16th century, the Franciscan missionaries laid the foundations of the Cagsawa Church, a sanctuary that would bear witness to the passage of time and the resilience of a community. Sadly, the church endured its first trial when it fell victim to the flames of Dutch pirates in the 17th century. Undeterred, it was rebuilt in the 18th century, only to face a more formidable adversary—the eruption of the mighty Mayon Volcano that ravaged the town and reduced the church to ruins in the early 19th century. Today, all that remains is a haunting fragment—a solitary tower, a silent witness to the destructive power of nature.

The Cagsawa Ruins Park, a collaborative effort between the municipal government of Daraga and the National Museum of the Philippines, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the people. A popular tourist attraction in Albay, it offers more than just a glimpse of the past. Explore the Cagsawa National Museum, where a captivating collection of photographs depicting the eruptions of Mayon and other related artifacts await. As you wander through the park, you'll encounter charming souvenir shops and stalls, offering a chance to bring home a piece of this poignant experience.
